Construction Engineers

Engineers are useful from the stage of project conceptualization to completion. Usually, all construction projects need inputs from engineers, skilled and semi-skilled workers. Structural engineers often work with architects, quantity surveyors, and project managers at the initial stage of construction. While they coordinate building projects, civil engineers also ensure that building designs are followed to the letter, covering every detail that needs to be catered to. Let’s share other roles that engineers play in project constructions.

What Type of Engineers Are Involved In Building Services

Generally, the team of consultants for construction projects involves skilled professionals, and these are the type of engineers that might fit.

  • Civil engineers
  • Electrical engineers
  • Geotechnical engineers
  • Structural engineers
  • Mechanical Engineers
  • Production and material engineers

Joining the Construction Project Team

Usually, the early stage of construction is the selection of your project team. The stage of creating designs for projects that involve structure is done by the architect. While ensuring the architect’s designs conform to safety standards, structural engineers use some basic performance factors to guide the architect to warrant that the concrete render holding the four walls of the building have the strongest and the best foundation base.

When structural engineers handle the design of structures, they consider the strength of every part of the building and how it affects the load and stress factors starting from the texture of the foundation cement to the pebble mix used for the final flooring base. It’s this calculation that helps the building to overcome the weight of every material that has been utilized. As work begins, the structural engineers supervise contractors and inspect all the components that have been used to construct the building permitted by the council depending on the area of construction. It’s a responsibility that might affect the reputation of the engineer if the design fails and if the right permits and documentation have not been availed from the relevant authorities. The team should comprise of qualified engineers that have undergone or have themselves experienced in the fields related to construction and project management. The rest of the procedures can be carried out smoothly if the teams are led by such individuals that can give a proper path, direction and cater to every technical detail required for the successful completion of constructing the building.

Site Planning

After the initial phase of team selection and design, the project engineer moves to site for proper planning of the layout. Usually, heavy machinery and materials will need access to the construction site. Arrow boards specifying construction works and cautionary messages need to be planted across the construction site, especially in the case where the building is being set towards the city side or busy roads with vehicle passing by, by the minute. Apart from the movement of resources, site preparation is important to support pilling works, foundations, beams, and columns. Unstable parts of the site will need to be fortified to create a solid platform for construction work.

With a clear understanding of what the project entails, the site engineer will plan a timeline for every phase of construction. Also, the civil engineer will need temporary facilities like warehouses, machine workshops, offices, water, road and electricity for the project. A good engineer uses cost-saving measures to plan resources like finances, time, manpower, and materials. It is upto him/her to ensure that an efficient and effective timeline for construction has been maintained covering cost and ensuring cost economies for the best final result. All this collectively leads to the property to attain value overtime when the property is offered in the market for sale.

Supervising Building Supplies and Services

Project managers rely on mechanical engineers to provide specifications of systems that will be used in the building. Their planning and resource allocation entirely depend on the reports or the information compiled by the mechanical engineers and sent to them on time. Hence a huge chunk of responsibility lies in the hands of these engineers who are in direct contact with the construction site, workers, contractors, relevant authorities and the council members for verification and approval certificates. As part of building services, the mechanical engineer plans with the contractor or supplier and inspects fixtures that will conform to the building’s design. Pipes for gas distribution to the kitchen and heater will be outlined schematically. Also, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, lighting fixtures, control systems, wastewater drain pipes, and electrical installations are part of building supplies.

Engineers Conduct Quality Tests

During construction projects, we understand that different type of engineers plays their roles on site. For both commercial and residential building constructions, specialists like the QA (quality assurance) and QC (quality control) personnel are responsible for assessing the integrity of materials and on-site operations that occur. With the report from both QA and QC engineers, the project manager gets a proper understanding of how to maintain the building’s standard. The building needs to have maximum value and quality in its design and built as we wouldn’t want the months of hard work to be easily offered for sale by owner due to sheer negligence to minor details. Mostly, the quality checks and tests are approved through different personnel after thorough checks and authorizations.

Engineers Conduct Training

As part of the construction project engineer’s responsibility, the training of subordinate skilled and unskilled workers is a task. Usually, environmental engineers ensure the safety of both workmen and structures. These professionals transfer knowledge for the development of every team that’s involved in the building’s construction. The training can be a few minutes of on-site instructions before work daily, or a refresher course for supervisors of every team. There may be plenty of trainees on the site receiving their first hands on experience with the project. It’s always best to have some fresh talent on board as long as it is ensured that they’re being led by professional engineers with years of experience handling important projects as well as providing training for the fresher trainees or the fresher facilities coordinators.
